High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting Kit
Aircraft High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights offer up to 6 times more light than standard incandescent or halogen
bulbs while drawing only a fraction of the current. The lights feature a 5,000 hour life and run cool so they can be
left on indefinitely. They come with a full 5 year, or as long as you own your aircraft warranty. HID lights deliver
candle power of 540,000 lumens for 14 or 28 volt systems and draw 2.5 or 1.25 Amps, respectively, for a total
of 35 watts of total power. HID lights are FAA/PMA approved and can be field approved for virtually every aircraft.
Bulbs are available in a 10 degree (landing) or a 28 degree (taxi) configuration.
HID technology provides the following advantages over traditional light bulbs:
- More light output. A 35-Watt HID lamp produces up to 6 times the lumens compared to a standard landing
light bulb. Night landings will be much easier.
- Whiter light. While a incandescent or halogen light appears yellowish, the HID lighting system produces a light
that is closer to that of natural sunlight.
- Increased visability. In most nighttime or bad weather situations, this combination of a whiter color and a greater
light output allows for a safer and more illuminated landing and taxi. In flight they will stand out for miles ahead
of standard lights. HID lights will allow you to see and be seen.
- Reduced power consumption. HID lamp systems draw significantly less power, 35 watts versus 50 to 250 watts,
from your aircraft's electrical system.
- Greater product life. HID is a type of lighting technology that replaces the filament of the light bulb with Zenon
gas. The gas is ignited to produce an arc of light when high voltage is applied. Therefore, there is no filament
to burn out. Due to the fact that they produce very little heat and draw only a fraction of the amperage of
standard bulbs, HID lamp systems are designed to virtually last the life of your aircraft.
- Distinctiveness. Your aircraft will not only have the latest in lighting technologies, but will also have that unique
eye-catching appeal. These lights will be noticed!
- Easy to install. These HID kits are designed to be installed with little modification to your aircraft. They are
virtually a direct replacement for your existing lights. For anyone who is mechanically inclined, this installation
is considered "do-it-yourself." A typical installation generally takes less than one hour for each light, it can vary
depending on access to the landing lights of your aircraft. The HID kits are ready to install right-out-of-the-box
and come complete with everything you will need including a set of easy-to-read, step-by-step instructions.
Please note that this is an FAA approved STC'd system and the installation will require the proper paperwork
completed by your mechanic. Check with your mechanic before performing any work.
These HID lighting kits are approved for most Cessna 150 through 210 Model singles and Cessna 337 twins and
Piper PA-28/32/34 Models with landing/taxi lights located in the wings. They are also approved for those Cessna
and Piper models that are approved for the Knots2U Wing Tips With Landing Lights.
Wing Tip Strobe Light Kit
The Whelen Wing Tip Strobe Light kit comes with all of the parts necessary to complete your wing tip strobe light
installation, which include: a Whelen HDA, CF Power Supply; a Whelen A650 PG and A650 PR Nav/Strobe
assemblies for each wing; a Whelen Shielded Wire kit with Connectors; and a Whelen Installation Guide. The
kit is FAA/PMA approved for 14 Volt and 28 Volt aircraft systems.
The Model HDA, CF Power Supply has the capacity for simultaneous flashing, alternate flashing or both. It is
designed to operate one, two or three strobe light heads. Operating the wingtip strobes in the alternating mode
will provide an accumulated 42 joules of power to each light. When in the simultaneous mode, the accumulated
power to each light is 21 joules. In the three light mode, the wingtips will flash simultaneous at an accumulated
21 joules each and alternate with a third light operating at an accumulated 42 joules. Outlet #1 is a trigger selector.
A switch mounted in place of the jumper will allow wingtip Outlets #3 and #4 to be turned off, while the tail Outlet #2
will remain on. This function is commonly used when the third light is for ground operations. This power supply
will operate from 10 to 30 volts DC.
The Model A650 PG/PR wingtip Nav/Strobe assemblies equip the aircraft wing tips with anti-collision and forward
Nav green and red position lights. They can be used to convert non-Whelen position lights into a position/anti-
collision lighting system. The small size allows for mounting into a wingtip enclosure if applicable. The light
assemblies are available in 14 or 28 volts and come in a radio-shielded version. The forward position lamps
are 26 watts.
This Wing Tip Strobe Light kit is approved for the Beech 33/35/36/55/56/58/95 Models, the Cessna 150 through 210
Models, the Piper PA-24/30/39 Comanches, the Piper PA-28/32 Cherokees, and the Piper PA-34 Senecas.
Slimline Fin/Body Mounted Strobe Light Kits
The Slimline Fin Mounted Strobe Light kits are available for the Beech 33/36/55/56/58/95 Models, the Piper
PA-24/30/39 Comanches, and the Piper PA-28/32 Cherokees. Also available in this section is a roof or
belly mounted strobe to replace the existing rotating beacon on the Beech 35 Series Bonanzas with the V-Tail.
Beech Fin/Body Mounted Strobe Lights
The Slimline Fin Mounted Strobe Light kit replaces the old rotating beacon with a new, smaller fairing and strobe
on top of the vertical fin. The strobe supplies much more light and draws only a fraction of the current as a rotating
beacon. Drag is reduced through the new streamlined shape. This will add up to 1.5 mph, even more when
removing a rotating beacon from the roof. The kit is available with either an Aeroflash single flash strobe or the
Whelen Comet Flash strobe.
The kit comes complete with everything necessary to install it including Slimline Fairing, strobe kit, step-by-step
instructions, and STC. It is fully STC/PMA'd for all Beech 33/36/55/56/58 Aircraft and installs in about 6 hours.
For the Beech 35 V-Tailed Model, the Whelen Model HR, CFA self-contained, body-mounted Comet Flash strobe
anti-collision light is available. This strobe has a unique polycarbonate optic lens and reflector design which
re-directs stray light rays into the horizontal plane to provide the maximum 360 degrees of uniform light coverage
possible. It is FAA approved as a direct replacement for any rotating beacon that uses a 3-3/4" diameter mounting
hole. It can be installed on the roof or belly. The kit includes the A440 mounting adapter for fuselage mounting
and will operate between 10 and 30 volts DC.
Piper Fin Mounted Strobe Lights
The PA-30/39 Twin Commanche Slimline Strobe kit replaces the fat rotating beacon with a small fairing and strobe.
The strobe offers more light, less drain on the battey, and reduces drag. Not only is the fairing considerably smaller
than the original, but it has been re-designed to go all the way back to the rudder while closing up the top of the
vertical fin. The kit also minimizes the clearances between the rudder and the fairing for even more drag reduction.
The kit comes complete with everything necessary to install including the strobe kit, fairing, hardware, step-by-
step instructions, and STC.
The Slimline Strobe kit for the PA-24 Single-engine Comanches allow the existing rotating beacon or strobe to be
removed from the roof and be replaced with a new Slimline Strobe on top of the vertical fin. The advantages are
more light, reduced drag, and less drain on the battery. Due to acceleration of air over the curved roof line, any
objects there can penalize speed significantly. By removing the old rotating beacon, 1 mph can be gained. The
kit comes complete with everything necessary for installation including new fairing, strobe, power supply,
installation kit, and STC.
The Slimline Strobe kit for the Piper PA-28/32 Cherokees replaces the old rotating beacon with a new, smaller
fairing and strobe on top of the vertical fin. The strobe supplies much more light and draws only a fraction of the
current as a rotating beacon. Drag is reduced through the new streamlined shape. This kit is available with either
an Aeroflash single flash strobe or the Whelen Comet Flash strobe. It is fully STC'd and PMA'd for all Piper PA-28
and PA-32 Aircraft, except T-Tail Models. It comes with everything necessary for installation including new fairing,
strobe, power supply, installation kit, and STC.
Pulselite System
The Pulselite System pulses your existing landing, taxi, and recognition lights in patterns which create an
illusion of exaggerated motion. Your aircraft becomes visible for miles even in fog or smog. The Pulselite is
STC'd for virtually all aircraft from a Piper Cub to the Concord. However, we are only offering it at this time for
single-engine Beech, Cessna, and Piper PA-28/32/34 airplanes.
