GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF EACH TYPE OF WING AND TAIL MOD
Gap Seal Kits
The purpose of a gap seal is to create a pressure barrier between the high pressure air on the bottom of the wing
and the low pressure air on the top of the wing. This pressure differential causes air to flow upward through control
surface gaps, which creates significant drag and reduced control authority. This condition is exaggerated on some
aircraft because the gap at the top is smaller than the gap at the bottom, thus accelerating the air as it passes
through. The gap seals stop the flow of air through the control surfaces and smoothes the air traveling along the
bottom of the wing, which further improves airflow. The benefits of a good Gap Seal kit will be: increased cruise
speed, improved rate of climb, crisper aileron authority, reduced stall speeds, and improved handling.
Knots2U manufactures gap seal kits for Beech, Cessna, and Piper airplanes. Their gap seal kits for Beech and
Piper are the most complete on the market, in that they cover the flaps, ailerons, flaps to fuselage, and stabilator.
Their flap gap seals for Cessna are easy to install and can be removed for inspections, annuals, and flap servicing.
The kits are made of 2024T-3 Alclad aluminum and install to look like they were meant to be there from the factory.
Knots2U estimates these gap seals will add 4-6 mph to cruise speed, add 100-150 ft/min to rate of climb, and
reduce stall speed by 1-3 mph. These gap seal kits are FAA STC approved for Beech 33, 35, and 36 Models,
Cessna 150 through early 210 Models, Piper PA-24, 30, and 39 Models, and Piper PA-28, 32, and 34 Models.
Also available is a rudder gap seal kit for the Piper PA-24, 30, 39 Comanche Series, which is estimated to
add 1-1.5 mph to cruise speed. These kits come complete with all hardware, step-by-step instructions, and
STC paperwork.
Laminar Flow Systems, Inc. (LFS) manufactures flap and aileron gap seals exclusively for Piper aircraft. Their
gap seals are made of aluminum and provide the same benefits described above. They are FAA STC approved
for the Piper PA-28 and 32 Cherokee Models and the PA-34 Seneca Models. LFS estimates speed gains of up
to 3 mph for the aileron gap seals and up to 3 mph for the flap gap seals for a total of up to 6 mph. The aileron gap
seals for the square wing Pipers install in about 1.5 hours. The aileron gap seals for the tapered wing Pipers install
in about 2 hours. The flap gap seals for all the applicable Piper models install in about 2.5 hours.
Lake Aero Styling and Repair (LASAR) manufactures flap and aileron gap seals exclusively for Mooney aircraft.
Their gap seals are made of aluminum and provide the same benefits described above. Their flap gap seals are
STC'd for the Mooney M20B thru M20G Models. Their aileron lower gap seals are STC'd for the M20B thru M20J
Models. LASAR estimates speed gains of about 1 mph for aileron gap seals and up to 2.5 mph for flap gap seals
for a total of up to 3.5 mph. The aileron gap seals install in about 2 hours. The flap gap seals install in about
12 hours.
Wing Tip Fairings
The most popular wing tip design in general aviation today is the Hoerner wing tip. It is by far the most utilized
tip design available on the market today. It is standard equipment on many production aircraft and, as a further
testament to its effectiveness, is used extensively on homebuilt aircraft. When used to modify existing aircraft,
the Hoerner tip is either added to the existing wing tip or replaces the existing wing tip. The design adds more
lifting area while reducing the high pressure build up of air near the trailing edge of the wing tip. It also promotes
a significant reduction in the vortices created at the end of the wing. When compared to the original square or
rounded wing tips, the Hoerner wing tips will provide the following benefits: increased cruise speed, improved rate
of climb, increased stability and handling, reduced stall speed, and reduced take-off roll. They also provide a
streamlined enclosure for exterior lighting systems and antennas.
Knots2U manufactures wing tip fairing kits for Beech, Cessna, and Piper airplanes. The Knots2U wing tips for
Beech replace your existing tips with new tough composite tips with landing/recognition lights in each wing tip.
They are FAA STC approved for most Beech 33, 35, and 36 Models. The kit comes complete with two new wing
tips, new 100,000 candle power landing/taxi lights and strobe lights, and everything necessary for installation,
including wiring, instructions, and STC. Installation time should be about 15 hours.
The Knots2U wing tips for Cessna and Piper are made of durable fiberglass and include halogen landing lights in
each wing tip with bulbs that are easy to change and adjust. These wing tips use your existing nav/strobe lights,
which are not included in the kit. They are FAA STC approved for the Cessna single engine 150 through 210 Series
and the Piper PA-28, 32, and 34 Series. Knots2U estimates speed gains of 2-4 mph. These kits come complete
with two wing tips and everything necessary to install them, including wire, circuit breaker, switch, installation
instructions, and STC. Installation time should be about 14 hours. Many of the above kits can be further enhanced
by the addition of a Pulselite System, High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights, or a strobe light kit, which are
described in the Exterior Lighting Mods Section.
Also available from Knots2U is the Arapaho Wing Tip Mod for the Piper PA-24, 30, 39 Comanche Series. It is a
Hoerner style tip with room for lighting built into the leading edge. It has room for dual navigation lights and a
strobe. Your existing lights will fit into the new tip. Additional lights are sold separately in the Exterior Lighting Mods Section. Knots2U estimates speed gains of 2-3 mph. The kit comes complete with everything necessary
to install and is fully STC'd. Install time should be about 4 hours.
Lake Aero Styling and Repair manufactures wing tip mods exclusively for Mooney airplanes. Their wing tips are
designed for the earlier model Mooneys with square wing tips. These Hoerner style wing tips attach to the end of
the existing wing without any need to modify the existing aileron balance weight. Your existing wing tip nav or
strobe lights will fit inside the wing tip front section, reducing drag. Drag can be further reduced by purchasing
the wing tips that incorporate a new nav antenna inside each tip. These wing tip kits are STC'd for the Mooney
M20B thru M20J Models. LASAR estimates speed gains of 1-2 mph. The standard wing tip kit installs in
about 6 hours. The wing tip kit with nav antennas installs in about 10 hours.
Flap Hinge Fairings
Flap hinge fairings reduce drag by smoothing the airflow over the protruding flap hinges and flap attachment bolts.
The ones we market come from three different companies: Knots2U and Laminar Flow Systems produce hinge
fairings for the Piper PA-28, 32, and 34 Series airplanes. Lake Aero Styling and Repair produces hinge fairings
for the Mooney M20B thru M20J Models.
The flap hinge fairings from Knots2U are made of a lightweight, virtually indestructible material called KYDEK.
Attachment is simple using Rivnuts and screws for easy removal during annuals or inspections. Knots2U estimates
a speed gain of 1-2 mph in cruise speed and installation times of 5-6 hours, depending on aircraft type.
The kit for Laminar Flow Systems is
made of aluminum and installs in 3.5 - 4 hours. They never need to be removed for maintenance and are guaranteed
for the life of the aircraft. LFS
estimates a speed gain of 2 mph. The Mooney kits from LASAR install in about 5 hours and LASAR estimates a
speed gain of about 1 mph.
Wing Root Leading Edge Fairings
Wing root leading edge fairings are installed at the junction of the leading edge of the wing and the aircraft fuselage.
The benefits associated with this mod include an increase in cruise speed, and increase in rate of climb, and
improved low speed handling. This kit is available from Knots2U for the Piper PA-24, 30, and 39 Comanche Series
the PA-28 and 32 Cherokee Series, and the PA-34 Seneca Series aircraft. Lake Aero Styling and Repair produces
the kit for the Mooney M20B thru M20J Series airplanes.
The wing root fairings produced by Knots2U are made of hand laid fiberglass with a gel-coat finish. They install by
using rivnuts and screws so the attachment is all from the outside. The kit comes complete with everything needed
to install, including hardware, step-by-step instructions, and STC. Knots2U estimates a gain of 1-2 mph in cruise
and 50 ft/min in rate of climb. The kit installs in 3.5 - 4 hours depending on the aircraft. The Mooney kits produced
by LASAR also come with the necessary hardware, instructions, and STC. They install in about 8 hours and the
estimated gain in cruise speed is 1.5 mph.
Vortex Generators
The vortex generators (VG's) we market are produced by Knots2U for Beech, Cessna, and Piper aircraft. This jet
age technology provides a dramatic improvement in aileron response, reduced landing and takeoff roll, improved flight
characteristics, reduced stall speeds, and improved safety. The vortex generators are mounted on top of the wings,
just oft of the leading edge, and on the vertical and horizontal tail surfaces. They are manufactured under Knots2U's
FAA/PMA from aircraft grade 6063-T6 aluminum and are alodined to a Boeing mil-spec. The vortex generator kit
includes installation tools, detailed drawings and instructions, templates for positioning VG's, Spares, Loctite
Adhesive, all the materials needed for the easy one day installation, and STC.
When you place your order for the VG kit, please provide the Serial Number, N-Number, and paint name and
number for your airplane. The kit will be painted, at an additional cost of $100, to match your airplane prior to
shipment. Knots2U estimates the reduction in stall speed in landing configuration at 4-5 mph. Installation time
for most applications should be 7-8 hours.
Wing Fillets
Wing fillets are installed at the junction of the wing flaps and the fuselage. They are produced by Knots2U for the
Piper PA-24, 30, and 30 Comanche Series. They were developed to improve your landings by smoothing the
vortices coming from the flap-fuselage junction, which then causes the air over the stabilator to be less disturbed
giving it more authority at lower speeds. They also improve cruise speed.
The wing fillet is made of hand laid fiberglass with a glossy gel-coat finish. The kit comes with everything necessary
for installation, including all hardware, step-by-step instructions, and STC. Knots2U estimates a gain in cruise
speed of 2-3 mph and installation time of about 4 hours.
Tail Fin Cap Fairings
Knots2U produces streamlined fin cap fairings for many Piper models that already meet the lighting requirements
without a light on top of the vertical fin. These fin caps are made of high quality hand laid fiberglass with a smooth
gel-coat finish and will install using the same attachment holes as the old fairing. They are STC'd for all Piper
PA-24, 30 and 39 Comanche Models and all the Piper PA-28 and 32 Models, except the T-Tail Models.
Since they carry the correct fairing style for all models, you must specify your aircraft make, model, and serial
number when ordering. Knots2U estimates a speed gain of 1 mph and installation time of 1 hour. These fin caps
are also designed to house streamlined strobe lighting systems. Click on Exterior Lighting Mods for the available
strobe lighting kits and pricing.
